I made this dress years ago and, like so many of my projects, I found it sitting in a box a day before my photo-shoot, waiting to be finished and shown off.

It had always been a little big for me, but 4 years later, no worries, I seem to have gained enough weight that it now fits perfectly….who would have thought I’d be happy about that?!

It is based off my ‘going out top’ that I got from Forever 21 (online) about 6 years ago. It was a black halter top with these stupid ties attached to the sides. I.HATE.HALTER.TOPS. So I’m not sure how I ended up buying this, but boy am I glad I did. Once I got it in the mail and got to try it on for the first time, I had a brilliant idea: what if I cut the weird ties off, cut open the halter strap and sew the ties on to those…..thereby making a cool adjustable top that crossed in the back and tied in the front under the bust, and MOST importantly, would no longer be hanging heavily and uncomfortably from my neck.

Once in design school, I learned how to make patterns from existing pieces of clothing and decided that this top would make a really cool floor length dress. I found a beautiful, amazingly soft cotton jersey in a lovely dusty rose color and got to work.

I still have the pattern for this dress (never throw away a pattern!!!) and I know how to grade it up or down in size and can make it in any color you might want and I can find as well! It would cost around $150 to make, including materials. Please contact me if you are interested in me making you your own!

This is the back view (sorry its on my dress form, but it wasn’t finished for the shoot). It can be adjusted and worn in many different ways and the straps being open as they are allows for a lot of adjustment in fit.

Happy New Year!

What did I do yesterday? Well, I made a dress!

I’ve had this fabric for almost a year, but had yet to come up with the perfect design. Little did I know that the inspiration would hit me on my drive up to Inverness last week when I found out the NYE party I was going to was upgraded to fancy-dress. Here it is!

With the swirls in the fabric, I wanted to go in the opposite direction and add some angels to this dress. I chose to do a three paneled skirt (my new favorite discovery….makes the pockets a lot easier to get to) and instead of rounding the hem, I kept it straight, giving me three points on the skirt, the longest in back and two on the sides. I’m wearing a petticoat in the photos to give the skirt volume, but this should make a nice summer dress once it starts getting warmer.

I didn’t have any other colored zippers on hand, hence the glaring white (that will be changed). The back scoops down, but not so low that you can’t wear a bra.

I also added some pleating details around the neckline that I accentuated with some top-stitching.

Happy New Year to one and all, I hope 2012 brings you much happiness and love.

I had the amazing pleasure of making my best friend’s wedding dress a few years ago, and like usual, had some fabric leftover at the end. We used a simple, really soft but sturdy cotton as the base of the dress, at that is what I had about 3 yards extra of. Question is, who wants another white dress? Not Katie! SO, we chose a lovely shade of teal blue and I dyed the fabric in the washing machine.

Katie wanted a 50’s style dress; fitted, simple, and feminine. So we chose a simple scooped neck for the front and back, along with simple capped sleeves. I also added extra dart detailing in the bodice to accentuate Katie’s amazing figure. The skirt (of course!) has in-seam pockets for added comfort and ease. The skirt was a full circle skirt, but ended up being too short, so I added a 4 inch wide straight strip to the bottom, which added the length I was looking for, but gave the skirt a bit of a strange shape. In a moment of inspiration I made tiny little gathered pleats all along the seam where the skirt met the hem and it turned into a really cool design detail. Yay for happy accidents!

abolone shells, details, dress, flared skirt, flutter sleeves, jacket, silk, silk dupioni

My new sister in law has an awesome mom. Her name is Terri, and she asked me to make her outfit for their wedding. This project was honestly my favorite, EVER! I wish I could make all her clothes for her! Terri looked amazing, and best of all, she felt amazing. This was a labor of love, for both of us and I am so happy with the results.

The dress is made of a beautiful silk and I used abalone buttons to embellish the neckline. The jacket is made of a silk dupioni. The sleeves of the dress are beautiful flutter sleeves that mirror the flare of the skirt. Unfortunately we didn’t get a shot of them at the wedding, but I’ll work on getting some photos of her alone in each piece 🙂

Terri, Jessica and Steve. All looking amazing

Terri's jacket has cool patch pockets with more shell detailing. I'll get better photos of the details

All photos in this post are from the amazing Mike Milne.
