I can be a very hard person to shop for….when it comes to all things visual. I know I have a style, I just don’t quite know what it is, how to define it and how to share it. This makes giving me clothing or jewelry or anything like that a pretty risky thing, considering I never know if I’m going to like something.

One thing I am sure I love is Batik fabric. It is an Indonesian style of fabric dying that uses wax to make many different layers of colors and patterns. I don’t love ALL Batiks though….so when my mom gave my sister-in-law and myself small matching packages last year, needless to say I was a little nervous. I was ready to plaster that fake smile on my face, when I actually opened the gift. She did GOOD! Inside was about a yard and a half of a brown and teal Batik that I actually loved! Not sure if I would have ever chosen it myself, but I am very glad she did as I was able to make this beautiful skirt from it. Thank you Maman!

It is a basic Dirndl skirt, which means it’s a simple rectangle gathered together at the top in pleats to add fullness, then attached to a waist band. One of the most simple, and classic skirt styles there is.

I made this dress years ago and, like so many of my projects, I found it sitting in a box a day before my photo-shoot, waiting to be finished and shown off.

It had always been a little big for me, but 4 years later, no worries, I seem to have gained enough weight that it now fits perfectly….who would have thought I’d be happy about that?!

It is based off my ‘going out top’ that I got from Forever 21 (online) about 6 years ago. It was a black halter top with these stupid ties attached to the sides. I.HATE.HALTER.TOPS. So I’m not sure how I ended up buying this, but boy am I glad I did. Once I got it in the mail and got to try it on for the first time, I had a brilliant idea: what if I cut the weird ties off, cut open the halter strap and sew the ties on to those…..thereby making a cool adjustable top that crossed in the back and tied in the front under the bust, and MOST importantly, would no longer be hanging heavily and uncomfortably from my neck.

Once in design school, I learned how to make patterns from existing pieces of clothing and decided that this top would make a really cool floor length dress. I found a beautiful, amazingly soft cotton jersey in a lovely dusty rose color and got to work.

I still have the pattern for this dress (never throw away a pattern!!!) and I know how to grade it up or down in size and can make it in any color you might want and I can find as well! It would cost around $150 to make, including materials. Please contact me if you are interested in me making you your own!

This is the back view (sorry its on my dress form, but it wasn’t finished for the shoot). It can be adjusted and worn in many different ways and the straps being open as they are allows for a lot of adjustment in fit.

Happy New Year!

What did I do yesterday? Well, I made a dress!

I’ve had this fabric for almost a year, but had yet to come up with the perfect design. Little did I know that the inspiration would hit me on my drive up to Inverness last week when I found out the NYE party I was going to was upgraded to fancy-dress. Here it is!

With the swirls in the fabric, I wanted to go in the opposite direction and add some angels to this dress. I chose to do a three paneled skirt (my new favorite discovery….makes the pockets a lot easier to get to) and instead of rounding the hem, I kept it straight, giving me three points on the skirt, the longest in back and two on the sides. I’m wearing a petticoat in the photos to give the skirt volume, but this should make a nice summer dress once it starts getting warmer.

I didn’t have any other colored zippers on hand, hence the glaring white (that will be changed). The back scoops down, but not so low that you can’t wear a bra.

I also added some pleating details around the neckline that I accentuated with some top-stitching.

Happy New Year to one and all, I hope 2012 brings you much happiness and love.

circle skirt, cool design, cotton, design detail, dress, happy accidents, pockets, seam pockets, teal

I had the amazing pleasure of making my best friend’s wedding dress a few years ago, and like usual, had some fabric leftover at the end. We used a simple, really soft but sturdy cotton as the base of the dress, at that is what I had about 3 yards extra of. Question is, who wants another white dress? Not Katie! SO, we chose a lovely shade of teal blue and I dyed the fabric in the washing machine.

Katie wanted a 50’s style dress; fitted, simple, and feminine. So we chose a simple scooped neck for the front and back, along with simple capped sleeves. I also added extra dart detailing in the bodice to accentuate Katie’s amazing figure. The skirt (of course!) has in-seam pockets for added comfort and ease. The skirt was a full circle skirt, but ended up being too short, so I added a 4 inch wide straight strip to the bottom, which added the length I was looking for, but gave the skirt a bit of a strange shape. In a moment of inspiration I made tiny little gathered pleats all along the seam where the skirt met the hem and it turned into a really cool design detail. Yay for happy accidents!

cotton, jersey, light blue, skirt

My mom has a skirt she loves, but it is a black and cream pattern and was not going to work with the wedding colors. The skirt was a simple pattern and I decided that I would simply make a copy out of a different fabric. This skirt is made of a simple cotton/rayon jersey and you can see the detailing in the panel work a lot better without the pattern to distract.

My beautiful family. The movement of the skirt is captured really well in this photo.

My new sister in law has an awesome mom. Her name is Terri, and she asked me to make her outfit for their wedding. This project was honestly my favorite, EVER! I wish I could make all her clothes for her! Terri looked amazing, and best of all, she felt amazing. This was a labor of love, for both of us and I am so happy with the results.

The dress is made of a beautiful silk and I used abalone buttons to embellish the neckline. The jacket is made of a silk dupioni. The sleeves of the dress are beautiful flutter sleeves that mirror the flare of the skirt. Unfortunately we didn’t get a shot of them at the wedding, but I’ll work on getting some photos of her alone in each piece 🙂

Terri, Jessica and Steve. All looking amazing

Terri's jacket has cool patch pockets with more shell detailing. I'll get better photos of the details

This summer I had the amazing honor of being in my twin brothers’ wedding as the 4th groomsman! It was a perfectly magical day as Bret married Jessica and brought some truly amazing people together.  I had grand plans to make all the groomsmans shirts and bow-ties as well as make my own dress, the mother of the brides’ entire outfit, a skirt for my mom and trying to finish a vest for a friend….as well as move! Well, you can imagine the outcome. Made my dress: barely, made the mother of the brides’ dress and jacket: beautiful, moms’ skirt: great, and the bow-ties….as we were getting ready!

Here are some photos from the big day that show the groomsmen in our finest, and how we got there:

The bow ties were going to be made of two different colors. We all started with the same base color and then chose from the four colors I had for the second. You can see Andy and Bret hard at work turning the little rectangles inside out (yes, that’s how late we did this, but it really only took about 5 minutes as I had already sewn all the pieces.)

Drew helping Bret choose his color

And then on to Andrew

Once everyone got their pieces turned right side out, I ironed them flat and we put them through little loops I had made. This is what the awesome fake bow-tie looks like before the neck-band is added.

I used elastic, as I thought it might be more comfortable than ribbon, and found some metallic clasps for closures. I just slipped the band through the loop of the bow-ties.

The final looks:

Groomsman Katy, i.e. me!

All together now

Coming at you!

Have to show you the bride!

Jessica, the gorgeous bride, Bret the handsome groom, and me (not happy with how my dress looks, that one was too last minute!)

How To Make Your Own Lunch Tote!

As promised, here is the step by step process to make my Padded Fruit and Veggie Lunch Totes!

First, you need to figure out what size you want your bag to be. I start with the rectangular base size and then see how tall I want the bag and straps. This bag is about 4″x 8″ and then 5″ to the hand hold opening. You can tweak this, and the shape all you want, try experimenting with a piece of paper by cutting and folding till you get the dimensions and shape you want.

Now, you’re going to need some supplies:

– 4 different fabrics for the outside

– fabric for lining

– insulated batting

– DOUBLE fold bias tape (that part is very important)

– and some thread.

Tools you will need, that you will ALWAYS need when you are sewing something:

– good scissors

– an iron (having a board is great, but a towel on the floor works well too)

– needle or sewing machine

– pins

– seam ripper (your best friend)

And now you’re ready to get started.

Cut out your outer fabric pieces. Make sure you have 2 right sides and 2 left. Think about what colors you want next to each other before you cut!)

Do all your cutting at the same time, it will save you time later.

When you are making your pattern pieces, you want to scale down the batting and lining patterns a little to allow for three bags to fit within each other.

If you want to ad an inner pocket, or a label, you should do it while the lining is like this, otherwise it gets a little tricky. Working on a flat surface is easiest.

Sewing Step 1: Sew both sides and handles together and then press the seams open.

The ironing step is often overlooked, and that’s a shame. It takes 2 seconds and it makes things lie flat and look pretty. You should also (almost) always press your seams open, and not to either side. It creates the least amount of bulk.

Sewing Step 2: sew the two pieces together at the bottom and press seam open.

Sewing Step 3: Fold the bag in half, right sides (the side where the print is most dominant) together, and sew the side seams together, then press open (which I apparently waited till after this photo to do).

Sewing Step 4: Close the bottom corner openings by folding like in the above photo and lining up the edges and sewing closed. Flip you bag right-side out and Voila!

Tadah!

Sewing Step(s) 5: Repeat steps 3 & 4 on the lining and the batting, but don’t turn the lining inside-out. You want this to fit inside the bag.

batting bag!

Time to put them all together!

Ida has to take a peek.

Next, pin your binding all the way around the opening and the hand hols, or do them separately if this is too many pins for you.

Bias tape is cut on a 45° and therefore is kind of stretchy and can be pulled and manipulated to cover curves. Warning: the hand hols are really hard!

Now, I used a zig-zag stitch on my binding, but you can also use a regular straight stitch if you want it to be more subtle. Take your time, and make sure the binding is covering all three of the bags layers.

Then guess what? You’re done!

Enjoy! And have fun playing with pattern shapes and sizes. I will try to add some pattern PDFs soon.

Happy Holidays!

I love giving and making gifts for people. Every year for Christmas I make something for my family members, and this year was no exception. I fell in love with a line of fabric called Farmers Market (that you can find at Stonemountain & Daughter in Berkeley) when I was making an apron for my friend last year and came up with the idea of making small padded lunch totes!

From what was in stock that day at Stonemountain & Daughter I chose 4 fruit fabrics for the ladies and 4 veggie fabrics for the gents, as well as cotton lining, bias binding and some quilt batting.

Here are the final products! I have extra in inventory and you can purchase your very own at my Etsy shop.

Are you Fruit or Veggie?

Check back tomorrow for a how-to and make your own!

The following is an archive of some pieces I have made. This photo-shoot was done in November of 2009 in Inverness, CA. The photos are all from the amazing Drew Beck.

I hope this gives you a little idea of my style. Some of these pieces were made while I was in school, some were made for the person wearing them, and some were made for myself. I am working on all kinds of new things, so stay tuned for more current work!
